Thyroid “normal” — but you don't feel it

Hea keeps your thyroid results side by side over time, takes the history a GP would ask about how you feel, and gives you the questions worth asking.

Your TSH is in range, and you still feel exhausted, cold or foggy. Each result arrives on its own, so it's hard to show how things have changed. In a short appointment you need your symptoms, your results and your questions in one place.

How Hea helps

Your results over time Today

Save each report and Hea shows it as the lab printed it, next to your earlier results of the same test, in the same unit, with the lab's own range and marks. Hea grades nothing.

What TSH measures, and what can shift a reading Today

A fact card says what TSH measures and what NICE asks GPs to do, with sources. Hea lists what can shift a thyroid reading, such as a recent illness, a pregnancy in the last year or a change in thyroid tablets, and you tick what applies. If the lab marked a thyroid result, the card also asks the history a GP needs.

How you feel, in a note for your GP Today

Tell Hea how you feel. It asks about urgent signs first, then the questions a GP would ask about tiredness, including feeling cold, brain fog, sleep, mood and your medicines, and writes a note for your GP.

Questions people ask

What are the symptoms of an underactive thyroid?

The NHS lists feeling extremely tired, feeling cold more than usual, putting on weight, constipation, difficulty concentrating, low mood, dry skin or hair, a hoarse voice, and irregular or heavy periods. It also says some of these symptoms are common and can be caused by other conditions.

What does a thyroid blood test check?

It usually checks TSH, and sometimes thyroxine (T4). NICE suggests measuring TSH alone first in most adults, and adding free T4 in the same sample if TSH is above the lab's range.

Can my thyroid test be in range and I still feel unwell?

Yes. Tiredness, feeling cold and poor concentration are common and can have other causes. NICE asks GPs to bear in mind that one symptom alone may not point to thyroid disease, and suggests repeating the tests if symptoms get worse or new ones appear, no sooner than 6 weeks after the last test.

Can an illness or a supplement affect a thyroid test?

Yes. NICE advises against testing the thyroid during an acute illness, unless the illness may be caused by the thyroid, because the illness can change the result. It also asks GPs to check whether you take biotin, because a lot of it from supplements can make results read falsely high or low.

I'm on thyroid tablets and still have symptoms. What can I ask?

Ask your GP whether free T4 should be checked as well as TSH. NICE suggests this for adults who still have symptoms after starting treatment, and notes that for some people a change in treatment may improve symptoms even when their tests are in range. Your GP decides what is right for you.

Does Hea tell me if my thyroid is fine?

No. Hea doesn't grade results or say what they mean for you. It shows what the lab printed, your earlier results and general facts with their sources, and helps you prepare the questions for your GP.
